Hey everybody,

Seeing as the Ska thread went so well, I thought I'd tell you about another genre that I quite enjoy: that of 'Oi!'

'Oi!' is a genre of punk that rose to fame in the late 70s/early 80s. Many were disilluisioned with the pretentious turn that punk took during these years and yearned for a musical style just as gritty as punk but one that reflected the way people actually lived; one of council estates, unemployment, football matches and sessions in the pub. Thus, 'Oi!' was born and it was thoroughly working class. The majority of these new bands came (regrettably) from around London, with the noteworthy exception of 'The Oppressed' and the Angelic Upstarts. If you like your rock hard, then this might just be for you.

There's loads of Oi bands I could link to, but I'm gonna keep it down to some of the more infamous bands.

Pre-Oi:

Sham 69:

If The Kids Are United (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2GQMIXGRjaw&feature=related)

Hey Little Rich Boy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SdtIl2mneuY&feature=related)

Hersham Boys (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bzHFXzum95w&feature=related)

The 4-Skins (yes, the name is deliberate):

One Law for Them (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CI0EbuXOOHE)

Evil (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ru-gwvhuZqQ&feature=related)

Chaos (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NpVfOm-gv5Y&feature=related)

Cock Sparrer:

Because You're Young (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w9j26ik1XbY)

Tough Guys (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=llI5TnjGJNA&feature=related)

Running Riot (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AvDPweOW8So&feature=related)

Angelic Upstarts:

Solidarity (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1rJfv0zVnwU)

Kids on the Streets (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WpNDgExkPAg&feature=related)

I'm an Upstart! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9eGPChAU06o&feature=related)

The Last Resort:

Violence in Our Minds (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iDnoYFrlbSQ)

Resort Boot Boys (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xz3WPVwiLWQ&feature=related)

Freedom (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g0Pi44P6buU&feature=related)

The Oppressed:

Joe Hawkins (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cYt6Q8rnjJo)

Work Together (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dkr6M6SDzdc)

Special version of 'Cum on Feel The Noize' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uXVAR1you00)

The Business:

Guiness Boys (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GXwUzPdH-pE&feature=PlayList&p=77F78BA438A93343&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=4)

Suburban Rebels (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5rRYD7jUPBI&feature=PlayList&p=142C683015A0E311&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=4)

Smash the Disco's (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XjFKcZjLp8I)

Here's an article by Garry Bushell who provides far more detail than I ever could:

http://www.garry-bushell.co.uk/oi/index.asp

What's your thoughts?

I've never heard of that band, but they did suck. As far as Slipknot goes, they got their start just a few miles from where I live and I still can't stand them. I'm not really a fan of growling and screaming in music though.

I'm guessing it's mostly our age difference. Since you like Slipknot I'm guessing your Mid-teens maybe? I grew up listening to Grunge and playing it my band. Thus, the love I have for it.

Fair enough. I just looked at the video you put for an example of Grunge though. It's pretty far off. I only listened to the first few seconds and had to stop. That's metal through and through.

Real Grunge bands came from Seattle in the early nineties. Bands like Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pixies, Screaming Trees. Those bands all rock. I agree that those who enjoy Metal need to have their ears checked though.

It wasn't meant to be an angry comment. I just don't like when people knock a genre that they don't listen to. I am sorry if it seemed like an angry comment Brooky. But I do think you should make a thread with the songs you like. I will be making a topic shortly about Punk rock and what not.

Ah, nice to know you like it fenrir. Getting hooked I see ;)

The origins of the word "ska" are highly mysterious. No-one really knows where it came from. I think wikipedia can tell you more about it better than I can:

"Ernest Ranglin has claimed that the term was coined by musicians to refer to the "skat! skat! skat!" scratching guitar strum.[6] Another explanation is that at a recording session in 1959 produced by Coxsone Dodd, double bassist Cluett Johnson instructed guitarist Ranglin to "play like ska, ska, ska", although Ranglin has denied this, stating "Clue couldn't tell me what to play!".[7] A further theory is that it derives from Johnson's word skavoovie, with which he was known to greet his friends.[8] Jackie Mittoo insisted that the musicians themselves called the rhythm Staya Staya, and that it was Byron Lee who introduced the term 'ska'.[9]"

(From the "Etymology" section of the Ska article)

Hope that helps

Your taste of music is amazing Biocrab.(I'm not really a Paramore fan myself but there ok). Also Brooky, Metal might have screaming in it, but behind the screaming there is meaning behind it. One of my favoured bands Rise Against are punk rock and they have parts where they scream and there songs have meaning behind them (stuff like poverty and things about government). If you like music that has no meaning behind what the singer is saying then that is fine. Just don't talk about things that you don't even listen to and have experience listening to. Another thing, why don't you make your own topic about the stuff you like instead of putting it in another persons topic which is made for rock/metal, not rave/happy music. For this part of the topic: Bullet for my valentine=win. Biocrab, this is the uncut version w/lyrics of tears don't fall I was telling you about:

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=PWxqd90-XWI

EDIT: There was probably only over 3 minutes of all the songs that had screaming. There wasn't enough screaming in my opinion =P

It was actually a good listen. The first and second wave are much better than the third wave in my opinion. The thing that I like about it is that it isn't like all these pop bands which are annoying. And the information that was given was good also =D.

EDIT: The more I listen the more it gets stuck in my head =P.

Some pretty decent tunes there, biocrab. Not my usual fare (if you're into the hard rock scene, look up something called 'Oi!'), but some good stuff nonetheless. Duality is one of my guilty pleasures! XD But yeah, I used to listen to stuff like this back when I was in high school to get me through it: if you like it, that's fine by me, don't let anyone tell you your wrong for doing so. It could be a lot worse: you could be an emo!
